As the sheet or paper web passes between the two blankets, both sides can be printed on to simultaneously. Utilising a flexible rubber or photopolymer relief plate that wraps around a cylinder, usually as part of the envelope production machine, flexo printing is essentially a modern version of letterpress and can print onto almost any type of substrate including plastic, metallic films and cellophane, as well as paper. Despite the fact that quality is traditionally lower that litho printing, this is the most cost effective method for printing larger runs.
